An accident between a school bus and a tractor-trailer that took place in South Harrison earlier this month left 14 students injured. The bus driver was trying to make a left turn but the driver did not see the truck coming. The impact left the truck overturned and leaking diesel fuel.
A total of 22 students were on board at the time and the 14 injured thankfully only suffered from non-life-threatening injuries. Police cited the driver with failing to yield the right-of-way to the truck.
At the Law Offices of Greg Prosmushkin, P.C., we know that this incident could have been much worse. Most bus accidents are preventable. Many, like this one, are caused by driver error. If you or your child have been injured in an incident and need a Lawyer, we will work to recover the compensation you deserve.
Driver Error One Of Many Factors
We know the above story involves a School Bus, but those are only one type of bus we commonly see in and around the city. Think about how many buses there are: long-distance buses, SEPTA Buses, shuttle buses, and more. Each of those can have devastating consequences if they are involved in an accident.
Consider what can go wrong. We have demonstrated how driver error is a factor, but what if the negligence is even worse?
- Drivers should never operate while Impaired By Drugs or Alcohol. They should also never be Distracted by their phones or other devices.
If a driver is not watching the roadway, they are likely going to cause an accident.
Driver error is not the only cause of Accidents. Companies and agencies that operate these buses must regularly inspect and maintain each vehicle so that nothing goes wrong while the driver is moving down the roadway.
The Potential For Devastation
Buses are large and weigh much more than regular passenger vehicles. When they impact a vehicle, they are likely to cause major damage and injuries. For the people inside the bus, we know that they are rarely restrained. While there have been efforts to require school buses to have seatbelts, those have not come to fruition.
When an accident occurs involving a bus, we commonly see things like spinal cord injuries, Traumatic Brain Injuries, broken and dislocated bones, severe lacerations, and more. The medical costs for these injuries can be extreme.
What if insurance does not offer enough to cover these costs?
