Becoming a United States citizen has many advantages. It enables you to vote in U.S. elections, and to sponsor relatives to receive green cards. The relatives that U.S. citizens are eligible to sponsor include spouses, children, parents, and siblings. However, the naturalization process can be complex, and is best handled by an experienced Immigration Attorney.

Considerations when Applying for Citizenship

To apply for U.S. citizenship, you need to have already been a lawful permanent resident for at least five years. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, this wait is reduced to only three years. Maintaining continuous physical presence in the U.S. while a lawful permanent resident is extremely important. If you spent more than 180 days per year outside of the country during this period, you will need to explain the reasons for your absence from the country. Our team of immigration lawyers in Philadelphia can help you fill out the necessary documentation and will provide you with legal representation.

Typically, you must meet many additional criteria in order to qualify for citizenship, including English literacy and familiarity with U.S. history and government. Furthermore, men between ages 18 to 26 are required to register for the Selective Service.

In addition, you must show that you are a person of good moral character. You may have difficulty acquiring citizenship if you are found to have any of the following:

  • Criminal Charges or convictions
  • Failure to pay taxes, child support, or alimony
  • An affiliation with prostitution, gambling, terrorist organizations, or smugglers.

If you have any concerns regarding your eligibility for citizenship, contact our Immigration Lawyers as soon as possible. To make an appointment, please call one of our offices in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or Trenton, New Jersey, or Contact Us online. With us, your consultation is always free.
