When you are out and about on foot, we know that the last thing you ever want to worry about is getting struck by a vehicle. However, the roadways are unpredictable and there are times when other people’s driving behavior causes injuries. At The Law Offices of Greg Prosmushkin, P.C., we are here when you need a Philadelphia Pedestrian Accident Lawyer.
Today, we want to discuss a recent crash that involved a Philadelphia Fire Department vehicle and one of our local citizens.
How Did This Philly Accident Happen?
At the end of May, we learned that a Philadelphia Fire Department vehicle Struck a Pedestrian at 21st and Market streets. The incident happened when a battalion chief’s SUV jumped a curb and struck a woman carrying her groceries.
The crash happened as the battalion chief was going through the intersection with his lights and siren. He had stopped and then proceeded slowly through the intersection when he was struck by a Honda. The impact sent the fire department SUV onto the curb and into the woman.
“She flew in the air and that is when I parked my car and I actually jumped out to help,” said a witness to the crash.
Driving around Philly can be unpredictable, especially when there are emergency vehicles involved. It is important that everyone remain vigilant when they are on foot, especially near intersections.
How Common Are Pedestrian Crashes?
For the latest reporting year in Philadelphia, there were 4,086 Total Pedestrian Crash Incidents. Out of those, there were:
- 150 fatalities
- 4,106 injuries
Nearly every pedestrian crash results in an injury or a fatality. Many of these incidents happen due to driver negligence, including those who operate while impaired by alcohol, those who drive while distracted, and those who disregard traffic laws.
Why Are Pedestrian Crash Injuries So Severe?
Pedestrians have no protection from the force of a vehicle slamming into them and they rarely have any warning before a Car Crash occurs. It is not uncommon for us to see severe injuries, including:
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or Amputations
- Internal organ damage
- Internal bleeding
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Spinal Cord Injuries
Each of these injuries results in costly medical bills for victims and their families. These expenses will only be the tip of the iceberg if a person cannot work and earn money while they recover from their injuries.
