When you are out walking around the city, whether to get some fresh air or heading to the store, you should not have to worry about getting struck by a vehicle. However, we know that pedestrian crashes happen at alarming rates. Recently, a young man was struck by a vehicle while crossing at the intersection of 56th and Walnut streets.

These Accidents Are Common In Pennsylvania
On May 10, a 20-year-old man was Struck by a Vehicle and thrown into a building in West Philly. The incident happened when the victim was crossing the intersection at 56th and Walnut streets. A driver in a 2009 Volkswagen was traveling at a high rate of speed and drove between two vehicles stopped at a red light.
“The vehicle passes through it and gets struck by a northbound vehicle traveling on 56th Street,” said Captain Mark Overwise, commanding officer of the Police Accident Investigating Division.
The pedestrian was struck and thrown against the wall of an apartment building. The victim suffered from two broken legs and internal injuries.
These Accidents are Tragic and Too Frequent
We wish we could say that pedestrian crashes were rare, but we know they happen all the time. For the Latest Reporting Year in Pennsylvania, there were 4,293 pedestrian crashes. Out of those, there were more than 4,100 injuries and 150 fatalities.
Nearly every pedestrian crash resulted in someone being hurt or killed. Pedestrians have no way to protect themselves from the impact of a vehicle. We commonly deal with pedestrian crash cases involving the following:
- Spinal Cord trauma (possible paralysis)
- Head injuries/Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or road rash
These injuries will lead to major expenses for a victim and their family. Not only will they have to contend with the medical bills that will begin to come in, but there are other hidden costs to consider.
If a victim is not able to work while they recover, or if they are permanently disabled, they will lose the income they need to support their families.
Who is going to cover these expenses?
