A Canadian man responsible for killing one person and injuring others in April of 2018 has been sentenced to four and a half to nine years in prison.

Shane Learn, 49, was driving in nearby Bensalem in April with his wife in the car with him when he left his lane and smashed head-on into a Lyft ridesharing vehicle that had passengers at the time. One of the passengers was killed and Learn’s wife was seriously injured.

Police said that Learn’s BAC was .162% at the time and that he failed two sobriety tests. He pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle while DUI, Aggravated Assault, and other Traffic charges.

These Accidents Are Severe

The latest reporting year in Pennsylvania tells us that there were 10,346 alcohol-related crashes. Out of those, there were 293 fatalities. These crashes were the cause of 26% of all traffic fatalities for that year.

But what about those who survive?

Unfortunately, there were over 6,500 people injured in 2017 as a result of people driving under the influence of alcohol. These crashes often result in the following severe injuries:

  • Spinal Cord Trauma
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Major lacerations or Amputations
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Crush injuries

In the aftermath of a crash with these injuries, a person and their family are often faced with major expenses. The medical costs alone can reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but there are also many hidden costs associated with these accidents.

This can include lost wages of a person who cannot work, the cost of home accommodations if mobility is an issue, as well as immeasurable pain and suffering. Many victims are permanently disabled and unable to enjoy life the same again.

Will your insurance cover all of these costs?

Will it replace your income?

Pennsylvania law enforcement works hard to deter drinking and driving, but they will not stop everyone. Anyone who makes the choice to get behind the wheel after drinking too much needs to be held accountable for their actions.
