Construction workers have important jobs, but they do come with risks. We know that safety is the most important thing in this line of work, and plenty of state and federal laws are in place to ensure safe practices. However, Injuries still happen due to largely preventable accidents.
Today, we are going to highlight a recent incident that happened here in the city. We are here at The Law Offices of Greg Prosmushkin, P.C., when you need a Philadelphia Construction Accident Lawyer. Let us help you get the compensation you deserve.
What Occurred In This Philly Case?
In this case, a worker was on a job site by himself painting the elevator door when he leaned back too far and fell down the shaft from the third to the first floor. The story says that two by four boards were blocking the entrance to the shaft but that he must have slipped through them.
The man used one of those boards to make noises in hopes of being discovered. Luckily, a coworker stopped by the site to get some tools. He found the man and called 911 immediately. The victim was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition.
We are not sure exactly what went wrong here, but we know that construction companies have strict safety regulations.
- Did they fail to provide this man with the necessary equipment?
- Why was the shaft accessible?
- Why was he allowed to work on a site alone?
All of these questions and more will be asked by OSHA as they investigate. We know that around 2.8 million nonfatal Workplace Injuries and illnesses were reported during the latest reporting year in the US. Many of those were in the construction industry.
The top ways that people get hurt in construction are:
- Slips and Trips
- Struck by an object
- Getting caught or crushed by an object
Construction companies must ensure they provide thorough safety training to all workers for each job they are asked to perform. They must also ensure they issue all necessary safety equipment to workers, including:
- Eye protection
- Respiratory protection
- And more
Companies that fail to do these things should be held responsible for any injuries.
