Virginia Drivers with PA Tickets
If you are a Virginia driver and have received a Traffic Violation in Pennsylvania, you must be aware that Pennsylvania has the authority to transfer the traffic violation to your home state of Virginia.
This is because both Pennsylvania and Virginia participate in the Driver License Compact. Under this contract, any traffic violation that occurs out of state can be transferred and is accessible to your home state.
Under Virginia law, any traffic violation that occurs out of state is accountable to having points transferred on your Virginia driving record. The traffic violation which is acquired out of state is recognized under Virginia’s point system, as opposed to the out of state’s point system in which the traffic violation was committed in.
For example, if you are a Virginia driver who has just received a moving violation such as ‘failure to yield to right-of way’ in Pennsylvania, then you, as the Virginia driver, will have four points added on your Virginia record.
This is because, while Pennsylvania’s law only accounts a ‘failure to yield to right-of way’ as a three-point violation, Virginia law places the traffic offense as a four-point violation on your driving record.
As a Virginia driver who has just received a traffic violation, you are responsible only for paying the fine to the state in which the traffic offense occurred. You, as the Virginia driver, are only responsible for paying the fine to the state of Pennsylvania, not Virginia.
